Have you been experiencing erectile dysfunction, been prescribed medications and still having difficulty maintaining an erection during sexual activity? What is a Penile Implant?BestUrologistNYC2

Penile implants consist of two attached cylinders (a reservoir and a pump) which are surgically placed inside the penis to allow men to get an erection. There are two main kinds of penile implants, semi-rigid and inflatable. To find out if a penile implant is right for you, your urologist can discuss the options, risks, types of penile implants, plus their pros and cons. Your urologist will review your history, do a physical exam, discuss your expectations, and what you need to do to prepare for the surgery.

What Can You Expect During the Penile Implant Procedure?

The penile implant will be done at a hospital or surgery center by a urologic surgeon. You will receive a general anesthesia or a spinal anesthesia to block pain in the lower part of your body. During your surgery the urologist surgeon will be inserted a catheter into your bladder to collect urine from your penis. The urologist surgeon will make an incision at the head of the penis, at the base or in the lower abdomen. Your surgeon will stretch the tissue in the penis which fills with blood during an erection. Then your surgeon will choose the correct size penile implant and place the implant cylinders inside your penis. Once the implant is in place, your surgeon will sew the incision closed. Penile implants surgeries usually take about one hour from start to finish.

After the Penile Implant Surgery

Your urologist will prescribe a pain medication to ease the pain after the surgery and an antibiotic to prevent infection. Your urologist will provide for you instructions about the healing process and care of your incision. Your urologist will give you an estimated date for you to return to normal activities. Usually you may resume sexual activities around four to six weeks after surgery.
